Bleaching Teeth

1. Regular dental checkups and cleanings are important before and after bleaching to maintain a healthy smile.

2. Teeth are naturally darker along the gum line. These areas may require more time to lighten than the rest of the tooth surface and usually remain slightly darker.

3. A small percentage of patients experience sensitivity with bleaching.  It usually lasts for only an hour or two after you take out the trays.  The first 2-3 days are usually the most sensitive. If it lasts longer than that, please contact our office.  We recommend that you initially bleach 7-14 continuous nights.  Food and juices high in citric acid can cause sensitivity to the teeth.

4. Some patients have noticed temporary discomfort of the gums, lips, throat, or tongue.  Make sure that you wipe off extra bleach gel from gums.  Should any of these symptoms persist more than two days or progressively worsen, call our office.  These side effects will usually subside within 1-3 days after treatment is discontinued.

5. Coffee, tobacco, and other products can restain your teeth over time.  Should this occur, the teeth can be re-whitened within a few nights of bleaching.  We normally suggest re-bleaching your teeth every 3 to 6 months.

6. Some old amalgam or “silver” fillings may leave a dark purple color in your bleaching tray; this is normal

7. Store bleach out of sun and heat.  Best if kept refrigerated. Stored bleach will lose effectiveness in approximately one year.

8. Every one to three months bleach once to bring teeth back to the whiteness you desire.
